What should a passport photo look like?
A passport photo should be evenly lit, without shadows on the face. The face should be positioned centrally in the picture so that the chin and hair are shown in full. The size and background of the passport photo can vary depending on the country, but in Europe the standard 3.5cm x 4.5cm and white background generally applies.
What should a Swiss passport photo look like?
Photos for a Swiss passport or ID have a size of 3.5 cm wide and 4.5 cm high and are taken against a white background. As with most passport photos, the face must be well lit, without shadows, the mouth must be closed, the face should be photographed centrally so that neither the left nor the right side can be seen better than the other. This also applies to your SwissPass picture. You can find more information from the federal government here.
Can I take my own passport photo?
In principle, you can also take passport photos yourself, but there are a few things to bear in mind. Since the regulations for passport photos are quite strict, there is a greater chance that the photos will be rejected if they are not taken professionally. If you still want to take the pictures at home, you will find some tips here:
- Photograph yourself in front of an evenly lit white background and avoid shadows
- Make sure your body and face are in a frontal position so that no shadows form on your face
- Basically, you should have a neutral facial expression, but a slight grin is allowed
- If you wear glasses, make sure that there are no reflections (otherwise do not wear glasses)
- Find out about the specific requirements for your passport photo (e.g. section size) on the website of the consulate of the country for which you need the passport photo.
What is a biometric passport photo?
A biometric passport photo, as used for the Swiss or European passport, for example, must meet EU or ICAO requirements. Biometric passport photos facilitate facial recognition based on the image.
What is the right passport photo format?
The format of your passport photo depends on the country for which you need it. In principle, however, the following applies:
- EU & Switzerland: 3.5×4.5 cm
- Great Britain: 3.4×4.5 cm
- USA: 5×5 cm
- Canada: 5×7 cm (must be taken in a photo studio)
- India: 5×5 cm
Important information on passport photo requirements can be found on the website of your consulate.
Where can I find the applicable requirements for passport or visa photos?
If you are unsure about the passport photo requirements of a specific country, we recommend that you consult the official websites of the respective consulates. You will normally find the relevant information under the headings “Documents”, “Passport” or “Services”.
Can I also take baby passport photos with you?
